Holiday Quilt Fabrics And Patterns: Valentines Day, Halloween And Thanksgiving
By:
Published: June 1, 2007
Though quilting is thought to have begun in the times of the Crusades, the activity still remains popular today. People often sit for hours at a time, quietly engaged in the age-old tradition of quilting. Special holiday quilt patterns and fabrics gain special popularity around the holidays, and can add unique prints to any quilter's design.
Quilt patterns exist for just about every holiday imaginable. Valentine's Day, Halloween, and Thanksgiving are three of the most popular holidays for which fabric is purchased. Valentine's Day quilt patterns usually contain hearts, lips, or a pink and red striped or dotted pattern. Besides pink and red, other typical Valentine's Day fabric colors include purple, cream, white, gold, and occasionally orange. Valentine's Day quilt patterns are not limited to these colors, but they remain the most popular. Some designs display popular characters such as Betty Boop or Mickey and Minnie Mouse with hearts floating around their heads.
Halloween quilt patterns are generally placed amongst fall quilt patterns. Most of these quilt patterns contain fall colors such as brown, orange, tan, yellow, cream, and occasionally green and purple. Sometimes the colors themselves are the main focus, as in plaid, striped, or dotted designs. Leaves are very popular among Halloween and fall fabrics, especially tan, yellow, and orange ones that seem to float from empty branches to the cold, hard ground. Pumpkins, witches, spiders, spider webs, and bats remain favorites among the more specifically Halloween designs.
Thanksgiving quilt patterns tend to be lumped together with fall and Halloween fabrics. They often contain the same colors – brown, orange, tan, yellow, and cream – and sometimes the same objects such as pumpkins and leaves. But, as with Halloween fabrics, there are some patterns made especially for Thanksgiving quilts. Some incorporate cornucopias with fruits and vegetables spilling out into their designs. Turkeys, pilgrims, and Native Americans also make appearances in a great number of Thanksgiving holiday quilt fabric.
As for material, one hundred percent cotton fabrics are best for most quilt patterns. Cotton generally holds up against wear and tear. Although cotton fades, blends of other materials that do not fade are harder to work with when quilting. The scale of the print must be considered when purchasing. If the quilter must cut the fabric into smaller patches, a larger pattern may be lost when split into too many pieces. Also, some fabrics' prints have a specific direction. More fabric of this type may need to be purchased since special cutting will be necessary.
Holiday quilt patterns can be purchased at a variety of online fabric suppliers including eQuilter, Bear Paw Quilt Company, and The Tattered Rabbit Quilt Shop. Although holiday quilt patterns are easiest to find when the holiday season is near, many do remain available throughout the whole year. One hundred percent cotton holiday quilt fabric usually costs about $7.20 to $7.75. Other fabrics, like flannel, tend to be a little more expensive at about $8.00 per yard. When on sale, cotton holiday fabric prices can dip down into the $5.00 range at some suppliers.
Quilt patterns, fabrics, and materials vary greatly; the quilter can truly make a quilt however he or she wishes. This fact is especially true during holiday seasons, when special holiday quilt patterns become very popular and can be more easily purchased.
