Quilting is a timeless tradition and form of artistic expression. A lot of the fun of quilting arises from choosing what quilt fabric to use to make a vision come to life. The availability of quilt fabric in unlimited colors and patterns results in quilts that celebrate just about anything. Quilting is very popular in rural Americana areas.
For this reason patriotic fabrics are of a very high demand.
Getting holiday fabric is the first step to creating an all American quilt. The American flag is a standard place to start when searching for 4th of July fabrics, Memorial Day fabrics, and other patriotic holidays such as Presidents Day. There are several iconic symbols that can be found including stars, stripes, American eagles, and even patriotic statements.
It is not very common to find 4th of July fabrics devoted strictly to this holiday. The same goes for Memorial Day and Labor Day fabrics. For this reason a red, white and blue quilt block comes in very handy. Once several quilt blocks are completed the only thing left to do is sew them all together with larger pieces of quilt fabric to create a patriotic statement
Several retailers of quilt fabric sell quilt blocks that have a design of some sort on them. A quilt block is a square piece of fabric that can be easily added to any quilt. McCall's, a household name in sewing patterns, offers eight different red, white and blue quilt block patterns. For example, the McCall's website gives detailed instructions on how to construct the Northumberland Star quilt block. All that is needed to construct this quilt block is cream quilt fabric, red quilt fabric, and quilt fabric with a blue print. Sewing together the Northumberland Star quilt fabric block is an excellent place to start a patriotic quilt.
Thanks to modern technology, custom quilt blocks can be made to include photographs. To create a custom printed quilt block all a quilter needs is a digital photograph of whatever it is they want printed on the quilt fabric. This digital information combined with any choice of fabric results in a custom printed quilt block. A custom printed quilt fabric is a great idea for creating a Presidents Day quilt. Digital photographs of any president can easily be found online. Choose any number of photos, have them printed on quilt fabric, and then sew them together to create a celebration of the American presidency.
With the arrival of the bicentennial in 1976, quilting reemerged as a popular hobby. Consequentially, so did the demand for fabric that would cater to patriotic quilts. The options for patriotic quilt fabric are endless and sure to result in a beautiful and proud statement for America.
